For many watch enthusiasts, it's hard not to get captivated by complications and intricate features.
After all, additional functions showcase the watchmaker's skill and the designer's creativity. However, we must not forget that the purest form of a watch is the time-only model, which deserves special attention. Reducing a watch to its basic function allows other qualities to shine: a free design in its purest form helps clearly interpret the brand's aesthetic codes without the distraction of complications. Based on this, we present a selection of the best time-only watches available on the market today.
We could extend the list to cover almost all leading global brands, including affordable models, but we decided to limit it to watches that are relevant today. As a result, some high-end independent brands that deserve separate mention are not included, but perhaps in the future they will be.
Timex Marlin

If you're just starting to explore true mechanical watches but value design, the Timex Marlin is an excellent choice. Despite its affordable price, these watches come with a manual mechanical movement, offering the tactile experience of classic watchmaking. The Reissue model features an elegant traditional style, making it an ideal option for those wanting to try time-only mechanical watches on a budget.
- Price: $209 USD
Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38 mm

One of the most famous time-only watch designs is the field watch. They originated from highly functional models made for the military during World War II, such as the renowned Dirty Dozen series. Although Hamilton was not part of this list, the Khaki Field line has become one of the most sought-after among field watches. The Murph model, featured in Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" (2014), has become even more desirable. The watch is distinguished by its high readability and classic design.
- Price: $895 USD.
Dennison DateNight

I might be a little biased towards this model. The unique feature of this model is its natural mother-of-pearl dial, crafted in the parquetry marquetry technique, giving the watch a refined and elegant look. Combined with a sophisticated case, this elevates it above its price segment.
- Price: $995 USD
Baltic Prismic

The French micro-brand Baltic has quickly won our affection. The company takes classic designs and makes small adjustments, adding its own character while keeping an affordable price tag. The Prismic model features sharp angles and geometric shapes that give classic cocktail watches originality and expressiveness. It looks particularly striking on a Milanese bracelet, emphasizing style at more formal events.
- Price: from 1800 AUD.
Tudor Black Bay 54

The smaller version of the legendary Black Bay has been on my wishlist since its announcement in 2023. These watches combine everything needed for a great model: a high-precision Kenissi movement, a classic design with retro elements in a modern execution, and features typically found in more expensive watches. The T-Fit micro-adjusting bracelet and unidirectional bezel with a pleasant click are particularly noteworthy. I hope Tudor continues to develop this compact line.
- Price: $4050 USD.
Grand Seiko SBGW297 Boshu Red

This list would be incomplete without Grand Seiko, and the SBGW287 Boshu Red with manual winding has always caught my attention. Although the dial lacks the recognizable Snowflake or White Birch textures, the deep red color inspired by autumn shades looks very sophisticated. Inside is the caliber 9S64 — one of the brand's basic mechanical movements, which nevertheless reflects Grand Seiko's high standards. The diameter of 37.3 mm and lug-to-lug distance of 44.3 mm make the watch versatile for most wrists.
- Price: $4900 USD.
Rolex Submariner

Although the Rolex Submariner often appears in various rankings, its influence cannot be ignored. The best version is considered the no-date model with reference 124060 — possibly the most recognizable watch in the world. The design has barely changed since 1962 (model 5513), demonstrating Rolex's evolutionary approach. The 41 mm diameter — the first in Submariner history — gives the watch a more balanced look compared to the bulkier previous version. Symmetry, legendary design, and the simplicity of the dial make them one of the best time-only watches.
- Price: $9100 USD.
Cartier Tank Louis Cartier

The updated version of the Tank Louis Cartier, presented at last year's Watches & Wonders, can be considered the pinnacle of Cartier's watchmaking art. This is the most elegant version of the Tank silhouette, with a new sunburst guilloché dial and many details unique to Cartier. At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary Tank, but it is actually the quintessence of one of the most legendary classic watches.
- Price: $14,900 USD.
Vacheron Constantin Historiques 1921

The term "conversation piece" is often used in the watch world, but few watches can draw attention from afar like the Historiques 1921. Inspired by the style of the 1920s and worn on the wrist at an unusual angle, these watches captivate with their beauty. They are made of precious metals, with large Arabic numerals and a small seconds subdial. The 4400 AS movement engraved with the Geneva Seal is visible through the sapphire crystal case back. The high quality and attention to detail justify the high price.
- Price: $40,400 USD
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds

A watch can change dramatically with the right bracelet, and this Jaeger-LeCoultre model is a prime example. The Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds features a luxurious gold Milanese bracelet that flows over the wrist. The solid gold tone gives the watch a jewelry-like flair while maintaining restraint. This is my favorite version of the Reverso, and I am not shy to admit it.
- Price: $44,400 USD.
This selection of the best time-only watches reflects the diversity and depth of watchmaking art, demonstrating that even in simplicity, there is room for perfection and unique design. Choosing such watches is a conscious decision in favor of classicism, functionality, and aesthetics that remain relevant over time.
